More About Us
Explorer Post 63, co-sponsored
by the St. Francis Days Committee is a youth group originated in May
1969 for the purpose of providing service in the community in areas of
First Aid, Communications, and Traffic Control. The Post is
chartered by the Boy Scouts of America and is operated under the
guidelines set forth by the Boy Scouts of America. Post 63 is
the only unit of its type in the Milwaukee County. Funding
for the group is provided by donations received from community
organizations, businesses, individuals, and the membership itself.
Membership is open to all
young people who are at least fourteen years of age and in the ninth
grade. Said members receive training in First Aid, CPR, and
Emergency Preparedness. First Aid and CPR training are
provided through our personal trainer. This program is
approved by the American Heart Association. All youth members
and adult staff members are required to pass this program and attend
the yearly recertification programs. Youth members attaining
the age of twenty-one are given the opportunity to become part of the
adult staff.
To provide the quality of
service we do, we utilize two way radios to maintain constant
communications with our members to inform them of emergency
situations. Each field team also has its own well stocked
First Aid Kit and water containers. These items do require
maintenance which we provide through donations received for our
services at various events. However, no group or organization
needing our services would be turned down for lack of funding.
Benefits of Joining Explorer Post 63
Volunteer
Hours/Community Service
Our motto
is "Service for the Community, by the Community"
Many of
our events can qualify for volunteer
hours or community
service hours if
needed. If we provide a service or assistance to another
group, it will count as volunteering or community service, depending on
the event. For instance on of our yearly events include
helping food pantries with donations as well as providing first aid to
boy scouts at a yearly camping event.
Over the
course of one year, we contribute over 2,500 service
hours to the community.
Friendship
and Fun in a Youth-Run Organization
Making
friends is just one of the small perks to this group. There is also so
many ways to have fun and make friendships grow. Usually when
there aren't any events going on, the youth members of the group will
plan what we call a "fun event." It is only limited to what
the youth can think up. Since our group is youth-run, they
have a significant impact on the majority of decisions that are made
for the group.
Résumé
Opportunities/College Applications
Community
service organizations are always impressive on résumé's and
applications for any job. College's are attracted to students
with extracurricular activities, community involvement, and
volunteerism. A youth member that becomes an officer of the
group is even more impressive. Youth are able to elect
officers every year including President, Vice President, Secretary, and
Quartermaster.
